The story

Built for patients and visitors at Freeman Hospital in Newcastle who arrive at a big, confusing site. Scanning the QR code on a printed wayfinding sign opens the trust's own site map, already knowing which sign you are standing at, and draws step-by-step walking directions to any ward, clinic or building. Staff can post short-term changes such as closed roads or entrances.

The clever bit

The map is the hospital's own printed sign drawing converted to razor-sharp vector, with a 'fan' of routes from your sign to every building drawn in the sign's own visual language.

What it does
  • Opens at the sign you scanned, no searching for 'you are here'
  • Step-by-step walking directions drawn on the official site map
  • Searchable A to Z of wards, clinics and departments
  • Step-free route option
  • Live service alerts for closed roads and entrances
  • Staff admin for updates and scan statistics
